Artist in Residence
About the Regis University/Colorado Film School Artist in Residence Program:
The program is a state-of-the-art model that allows advanced film students to work one-on-one with leading industry filmmakers on their final capstone film through the five stages of production: development, pre-production, production, post production, marketing and distribution. This year they are pleased to announce Ramin Bahrani as the Director Artist in Residence. Roger Ebert recently proclaimed Bahrani as “the director of the decade.”

Born and raised in North Carolina, American filmmaker Ramin Bahrani graduated with a BA in film theory from Columbia University in 1996. His first feature film, MAN PUSH CART (2005) premiered at The Venice International Film Festival (2005) and later screened at the Sundance (2006). The film won over 10 international prizes, including the FIPRESCI international critics prize in The London Film Festival (2005), before being released around the world to wide critical acclaim. The film was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards (2007) including Best First Film, and a Breakthrough Director Gotham Award (2006).
Bahrani's second film, CHOP SHOP (2007), premiered at the 2007 Cannes International Film Festival, and then screened at Toronto (2007) and Berlin (2008). Chop Shop was released worldwide to universal critical acclaim, winning several prizes including the Acura "Someone to Watch" Independent Spirit Award (2008) for Bahrani. In 2009 the film was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Director and a Breakthrough Acting Gotham Award (2008) for lead Alejandro Polanco.
In 2008 Bahrani premiered his third film, GOODBYE SOLO, as an official selection of the Venice Film Festival and won the FIPRESCI international critics prize for Best Film. Released worldwide to tremendous acclaim, the film was called a “near-masterpiece” by A.O. Scott of the New York Times, and Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun Times hailed it “a masterwork” and “Ramin Bahrani is the new great American director.” Lead actor Souléymane Sy Savané was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award (2010) and Gotham Award (2009).
Bahrani’s latest film, a short subject titled PLASTIC BA (2009), premiered as the opening night film of Corto Cortissimo in the Venice Film Festival where Bahrani was also on the jury for best first films. It later screened at Telluride, New York and SXSW Film Festivals. The film features the voice of legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog and an original score from Kjartan Sveinsson of Sigur Rós.
Currently a Directing Faculty at Columbia University’s graduate film program, Bahrani was a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship (2009) and was also the subject of several international retrospectives including the MoMA in New York City, Harvard University, Walker Arts Center, and the La Rochelle Film Festival in France. Roger Ebert listed Chop Shop as the 6th best film of the decade and proclaimed Bahrani as “the director of the decade.”
